sanding before powder coating rims?
I want to get my rims powder coated. My biggest question is can I just use 200-600 grit paper to remove some of the coating on my stock rims? Then powder coat it to black? Just remove the gloss and stuff and make the surface a bit hard for paint to stick? Or do I have to remove everything to bare metal? Don't tell me to sandblast my wheels I dont have any money. The rims I have are rays forged wheels is 6061 aircraft grade aluminum. So would it hold or what?
Well if you don't find the money to blast the wheels first, you may waste all the money you use to coat!
The powder can be applied over existing finish, but there may be problems with evenness. Then it goes in the oven so the powder can cross link (cure). While in the oven, there is no telling what the original finish may do. If it emits gases, they will show up as bubbles and pock marks in the powder.
I ran paint lines for years, and we could coat over Bondo, and some types of paint. A lacquer based paint always had to be stripped off.
Check with your powder coater, or have them sprayed instead of powdered.
