Anyone remove a wood (or long club) to make room for an xtra wedge?
Along with my Pitching Wedge I have a 50* GW and 56* SW.
Lately I've found I've been in between distances with my PW (45*) and GW and have to adjust my swing when I need something between 50 and 56! More often than not, I'm indecisive on what wedge to use when dealing with shots 110 yards in.
But with longer shots, I pull out a 3hybrid or 3 or 5 wood without questioning the distance.
So I figured, why make things so hard. It's better to be more decisive with the wedges and nail the distances so I took out my 5 wood and removed my 50* in favor of a 48*, 52* and 56*.
Yesterday, every in-between shot I was indecisive about (110 yards in) I was nailing with no problem!
Long shots seemed exactly the same as they always were and I don't miss the 5 wood at all. I just went to a hard 3 hybrid and everything felt the same!
I made a few changes a couple years back and it has helped my game immensely. Growing up I played a pretty standard set of clubs; Driver, 3 and 5 Wood, and 3 iron through SW. Im a pretty long hitter, and found that i didnt need to use the 3 wood to get to most par 5's in two. I still wanted a fairway wood to hit off the tee, and something with a little more loft so those long approach shots will land a bit softer. I also wanted to make room for another wedge, I had a big gap in between my 48 degree PW and my 56 degree SW. What I did was ditch the 3 and 5 wood, which had lofts of 15 and 20 degrees respectively, and picked up a Titleist 17 degree fairway wood (4 wood.) Now I still have a fairway wood for tight tee shots and long approaches, and have added a 52 degree gap wedge to my wedge set. Best move I ever made. My gap wedge is my favorite club in the bag, and I lay up to 120 yards whenever possible so I can use it.
Soon I realized that I missed the feel of my 5 wood, and wanted to put something in my bag for trouble shots and long par 3's. I ditched the 3 iron and picked up a 21 degree Titleist hybrid. It is easier to hit than my 3 iron, more forgiving, but still very playable. I do miss my 3 iron for low punch shots, but I can pretty much do anything I want with the hybrid, so its been a good decision.
