How do you figure a 2 part problem?

The sporting goods store sells two grades of golf balls one sells for $0.70 cents and the other for $1.05. If it receives an order for $7140 for an order of 8400 balls, how many of each kind were in the order?

First define your variable.

x=golfball 1
y=golfball 2

Second create your equations

0.7x+1.05y=7140
y+x=8400

Third move the x from the second equation to the other side.

y=-x+8400

This will make the x a negative.

Now subsitute.

0.7x+1.05(-x+8400)=7140

Go through and distribute.

0.7x-1.05x+8820=7140

Now combine like terms.

-0.35x+8820=7140

Subtract 8820 from both sides.

-0.35x=-1680

Divide both sides by -0.35.

Your answer is= The company sold 4800 golfball 1s

Now plug it back into the other equation.

(4800)+y=8400

Subtract 4800 from both sides.

Your other answer is= they sold 3600 golfball 2s

Your final answer is= the company sold 4800 golfball 1s and 3600 golfball 2s.
