Key Switch
Have a 76 mg midget. how do you tell if the starter, selenoid switch or key switch is bad?
none of the wires are shorting, loose, or brittle! Nothing looks burnt! Everything works except it won't turn over the starter. Was driving down the road when i heard an electrical type short , seemed like it was under the hood! When i shut off the car it would not engage the starter after that! Don't know if it is the selenoid, starter or the key switch! Any solid advise out there?
If it was the key, it would be smoking under the dash near the key(as the plastic wrap melts)...so it ain't that. Normally, there is not enough power going thru there to cause any problems. Out of my 18 different cars I have only replaced the ignition switch once, solenoids in about 5 of them, starter motors in none of them. As the solenoid piggy backs ontop of the starter(they come out as a unit) but come apart solenoid and starter motor. Solenoid is the "WEAKEST LINK" and most likely is that. Check the wiring down at the starter and make sure that it is all are clean and tightly connected and same can be said at the battery and try the key again. A weakly battery is what kills a starting system the soonest.
