Winter Golf Practice?

with 8 comments

I'm a freshman in hs and girls golf team starts in the spring. The weather is getting chillier and darker so I don't have as much time to practice. I was at my prime in September but everything is going down hill since then. I really want to play my best when it begins. Any ideas to keep me in shape and mentally sharp for when the spring starts? The weather isn't too terrible it, i will just have to bundle up, are there any cold weather golf accessories that help.

Winter golf gloves are available however I've found that rain gloves provide more warmth than winter gloves. Don't know why, just a personal observation. You can also get thinsulate underwear that works well with wind proof golf suits. And most importantly, don't forget to wear a hat.

  2. Weather rules. Suggest you begin a weight lifting program, one suitable for golf. Power rules in golf so this is probably the one area you can work on and have great future beneficial results. What I am trying to say, the power you can build this winter is more important than swinging a club. Your swing will change 1000 times during your playing years but power is the one thing you can keep forever. Part time PGA caddy, who is suppose to be at Q-school in Dallas this week but just didn’t feel like going. I caddy for Sonny Skinner who is in second place after the first day. He has been to Q more time than any player in history, 24 times. If you would like to carry for him let me know where you live and I’ll see what he says. I am just too old.

  3. If you have an indoor driving range in your town, I would go there as often as possible. If not, just bundle up. I would worry more about accuracy at the range than distance since the ball doesn’t travel as far in cold air as warm air.

  5. There are plenty of things that you can do over the winter to get ready for the spring. Get yourself a winter workout program started with aerobic exercise, weight training, stretching, work out in front of a full lenght mirror, chair exercise (you sit down in the chair and with a club across your shoulder making shoulder turns. this will help you to keep your lower body from turning), and you can work on your chipping and putting. You can do this is your bedroom like I am doing now. I work on my short chipping and putting, you used the longest part of your bedroom (if you have a hallway is much better with carpet) you make short chip about the distance of 4 shoes (line up toe to heel). You can putt all around the house if you like. You can get yourself a child club (age 4 to 7) used it to work on your swing, this way you don’t have to worry about breaking anything. And the most of all you can do is to work on your grip while watching tv while thinking about all the good moments that you had play this year. good luck

  6. Thomas had good suggestions about what you can do inside your house. Like one other person said.. if you have an indoor driving range or one that has a cover then go there! In the winter, I practice the chair exercise with bringing your club to your shoulder. I also go infront of a long mirror and practice my swing because you can see if you are bringing it back to the right spot or not. We have an indoor range that I go to a lot also.
As far as clothing and accesories.. I would sugges the following – (i will list links below)
    1. a windshirt
    2. a dri-fit polo
    3. i can’t find the pants i was going to link you to but just any warm pants.. even sweats with some long underwear.
    4. a hat

Those are just examples.. but really, when you go out to the range in the winter and its cold – it doens’t totally matter what you have on. Throw on a long sleeve warm shirt (really warm) and a windshirt/jacket and some long underwear and pants. Then put on your hat and your good to go. They do make winter golf gloves but I personally, don’t like them and I can’t find them on the website.
I am a sophmore in HS and we play in the fall. I was the #1 player in the district and the captain of my team. We played at state and got 3rd place as a team. It was probably 35 – 40 degrees at state. We were wearing.. long underwear, our team windbreaker sweats, longsleeve state shirt, our polo, fleece jackets and hats. All the girls wore gloves too. We didn’t look cute, we didn’t look like good golfers cause we were all bundled up but that is what you have to do. It didn’t do anything to our game obviously and the team that was said to get 1st place, was wearing long sleeve polo with shorts and they placed 8th. The girls said they couldn’t play cause they were too cold so they gave up on most holes. Anyway, so just wear whatever you want.. you just need to practice!
Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.. you can go to my profile and e-mail me or [email protected]

Like I said, the clothes I listed were just ideas but I HIGHLY reccomened a windbreaker jacket, windbreaker sweats and a hat.
    Good LUck!

  8. The short game is so important. Keep it fresh by playing on different carpets in your house. You’d be surprised to see how similar it is to playing on greens on different courses. I like to hit from one room to another with different carpet types to practice hitting from the fringe.

I also like to swing a weighted swing trainer that is short enough to swing inside the house. With mine, you can change the weight to feel more like an iron or a wood.

Over all, keep your ability to turn the key muscles for a full swing. I like to stretch by laying on the floor and trying to turn my hips to the otherside without moving my shoulders. That helps a lot.
