How can I free up Aluminium Castings from Mild Steel shaft?
They have been exposed to sea air before I bought the motorcycle, its proving a nightmare to get off, all contributions welcome
If you have tried penetrating oil,or any other kind of lubricant,CLEAN IT OFF, before you try to heat it. You could start a fire.clean any visible corrosion from the shaft. If you can heat the casting, heat it about an inch from the shaft. you want to draw the material away from the shaft.keep your heat moving ,so it heats evenly and you don't melt any thing,Dry ice or a wet rag that has sat in the freezer a while can help keep the shaft cool. You may need a puller of some sort,to press the shaft out of the casting. Do not hit the cast parts with a hammer, they will break. It seems like the more expensive they are,the more likely they are to break.if you can get them just a little loose ,you may be able to work them back and forth, until you get them to come apart. some people call this 'worrying' the part. There are 2 penetrates that I have found to work well 'Kroil" is hard to find. " PB Blaster" can be found at most auto parts stores,it works almost as well. Be patient, you can't rush it .Good luck to you!
